The Ultimate Ayurvedic Detox: Understanding Panchakarma

In our fast-paced, screen-heavy lives in 2026, we often take our shoulder mobility for granted until it’s gone. If you have been having difficulty reaching for a seatbelt, putting on a coat or even sleeping comfortably on your side, you may be suffering with Adhesive Capsulitis, sometimes known as Frozen Shoulder.
At Kerala Ayurveda & Yoga Centre in Toronto, we believe this ailment is not only a localized joint problem but an imbalance of the fundamental energies of your body. With time-tested, traditional Ayurvedic remedies, we help you melt away the stiffness and get back your full range of motion organically.
In traditional medicine, frozen shoulder is attributed to the thickening, stiffening and inflammation of the connective tissue capsule that surrounds the shoulder joint. But Ayurveda goes further to find and address the fundamental cause of this unpleasant restriction.
1. The Underlying Cause: Vata-Kapha Imbalance
Frozen shoulder is closely related to a disorder called Apabahuka in Ayurvedic medicine. It is primarily caused by a disturbance of Vata Dosha (the energy of movement) and Kapha Dosha (the energy of structure and lubrication).
- The “Freezing” Mechanism: Dry, cold Vata dosha accumulates in the shoulder joint, pulling in the natural, lubricating synovial fluids (controlled by Kapha).
- The Result: The tissues dry out, harden and lose flexibility, effectively locking the joint in position.
2. Custom-made Holistic Therapies
Unlike generic treatments that just use anti-inflammatory medicine or intrusive injections, our personalised treatments aim to deeply lubricate the joint and flush out the poisons that have accumulated (Ayurvedic Ama). Your treatment plan may include: Depending on your specific constitution,
- Abhyanga: A specific full body massage with warm herbal oils, to pacify Vata dosha, improve local blood circulation and ease stiff muscles.
- Podikizhi (Powder Bolus Massage): A treatment using warm poultices with therapeutic plant powders in them. This therapy is excellent for lowering inflammation, relieving deep pain and breaking up the ‘cold’ stiffness of Kapha.
- Elakizhi (Leaf Bolus Massage) : Fresh medicinal leaves cooked in herbal oils to penetrate the shoulder nerves and muscles, nourishing them deeply and facilitating speedier tissue healing.
- Nasyam: The delivery of medicinal oils through the nasal passages. The nasal passage is considered the gateway to the central nervous system, hence Nasyam is quite helpful in reducing stiffness and discomfort in the neck, head and shoulder regions.
3. Healing from within: Dietary & Lifestyle Changes
Real healing must have a double aspect, treating the body from without, and changing the substance taken into it.
- Warm, Grounding Foods: We steer you toward anti-inflammatory, easy-to-digest foods (cooked grains, soups and healthy fats like ghee) that naturally calm Vata.
- Gentle Mobility: We integrate particular gentle yoga stretches designed for your pain thresholds, slowly encouraging the joint capsule to open without creating additional micro-tears.
